Silver Reflectors

Friday, April 9, 2010 by Alyssa Davis
  Before              After

Our reflectors have been needing some TLC lately, so I finally had the time to get out to the shop and do some much needed reflector refurbishing!  Have you ever done reflectors before?  I sure haven't!  It is a very time consuming task and you need to be very patient.  We had to get special tacky glue and square silver leaf pieces.  It took about 2 hours per reflector to finish.  They are ready to go for your next rental.  You can find the prices on our website at http://www.hammergrip.tv/flagpricing.htm

Change of Pace

Thursday, January 28, 2010 by Alyssa Davis
Hello Everyone!!!!  So, I had the best opportunity come up last week.  As you know I mostly sit in my office answering phone calls, putting orders in etc......  So Derek asked if I wanted to actually go on a shoot for the day.  I said of course!!!!  I'm always hearing the stories about different jobs, all the hard work they do, how these lights work for what project that is currently going on.
Yesterday was my day............ Call time was noon, location Stage 80, a webisodes
spot for the Superbowl 2010.  Of course the Indianapolis Colts are in the Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints.  So we got to work with a great football player. I had the opportunity to see our Kino Flos and Tungsten lights and our 3 Ton Grip Truck in action.  I learned alot about what lights work on this project.  We had our 150w Dedo Light kit on this job as well.  I have to say those are small lights but they do get the job done right when you just need that extra touch.  I loved the opportunity I had on this shoot and I hope to do it again in the future!!

HMI Lights

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by Alyssa Davis
As you know I am more of the Office Manager than a Gaffer, Key Grip, or Grip that knows  more about the technical aspects of an HMI Light.  I was hanging out with some friends and they had asked what I do.  Now, for most people I tell them I'm in the Lighting and Film industry and I'm the one who takes phone call, run estimates, invoicing etc....  They had asked, what type of lights do you use normally?  I mentioned the infamous HMI Lights.  So the question became, "What does HMI really mean"?

I looked it up on Wikipedia's website.  So much information came up that I thought I would share a few pointers as to what HMI really means.  There are so many facts about this light that even my boss was impressed!!!

So HOW do you really pronounce HMI??  I think I will leave that up to you!  Its a hard word to say but now you may know more than you would ever know about the HMI Lights.

Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide, or HMI, is a mercury-halide gas discharge medium arc-length lamp with a multi-line emission spectrum. The "H" in HMI stands for hydrargyrum, Latin for mercury (Hg). An HMI lamp uses mercury vapour mixed with metal halides in a quartz-glass envelope, with two tungsten-coated electrodes of medium arc separation.

We have a varity of these HMI Lights right here at Hammer Lighting & Grip for your rental needs!  Here is a picture of the Mole Richardson 1200 Par that we carry:

Do you need Director Chairs for your next shoot??

Friday, September 18, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Here at Hammer Lighting and Grip we take pride in our equipment by making sure it is as clean as it can be.  I had the task to start working on the director chairs we own.  The chairs have been thru several shoots in the past years.  The seats end up getting worn, torn and just plan ugly! I ended up painting our one and only white chair to black.  Also, I took the chair seats and dyed them black.  They didn't exactly turn full black.  The fabric was so thick it took a week to try and get them to turn black.  They ended up turning to a navy blue.  If you ask me they are a ton better than they were before.  They are unique in their own way! I always want to make sure our equipment goes out to YOU in the best way possible.

Here are a few pictures of the updated director chairs.

C-Stands

Thursday, September 17, 2009 by Alyssa Davis

The meaning of C-stand  in the film production environment is used by the Grip department to accomplish various rigging and light modification task.

The name comes from the official term "Century stand", which in turn comes from the earliest days of filmmaking, when the sun was the only major source of lighting; reflectors were used to keep the light on actors.  There are also other various ways to use the C-stand.  Its primary purpose is to position various flags, color gels, bounce cards, and silks in front of light sources to block, direct, or modify the nature of the light.  The production team also loves to use the stand to make wardrobe racks.  We also like to use them for our Kino Flo's and the 1200 Par HMI .

One of my task for the last few days was to change the "O" rings.  Which are a part of the stand not many know about.  Its a rubber piece that sits between each section of the stand.  After awhile they start to fall apart, crack and just fall off.   It can be unsafe if not replaced.  Trust me, I got my finger smash a few times and it hurt!  Replacing these is just one more thing we like to do for you, so everything goes smoothly on your shoot.

We hear YOU!!!

Tuesday, August 11, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Ok, so we have made a few changes to Hammer Lighting & Grip.   It is now easier and better to look at our truck packages.  You may now click on which truck you would like to rent for your next shoot.   Please make sure you check them well because we have taken off a few items and rearranged them so we do not go over the DOT weight regulations.

Need Production Supplies for your next Shoot?

Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Well, we have them!  We have a variety of Production supplies that you might not even think a Lighting and Grip company has.  We have from 6ft to 8ft tables, to metal chairs for you catering needs. We have EZ-UP 10x10 and 10x20 tents for those Indiana rainy days or hot summers.  How about radios?  Well we have those too.  There are Motorola GP300 VHF Radios for $15.00 each.  This package comes with extra batteries, headsets, security headsets, speaker mics as requested.  As well as the 6 radio charger to charge the extra batteries while you are shooting away.  Come check out our website for more Production supplies options.

Another Green Scree Shoot

Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Lately, We have been wearing out our Green screens with so many shoots whether its small like our 8x8 or big like our 20x30.  We recently had the opportunity to work with ESPN again for the Indy 500.  They needed to fill an area with a Green Screen that had was bigger than our 20x30 and our 20x20 combined.  That also had match with no seams in the middle.
So we had the opportunity to buy a NEW 20x40 Chromakey Green Screen for them to rent and to also put in our backdrop inventory!!!

Now we have pretty good size inventory of Green Screens and also Blue Screens.  The best thing about it is that our 20x30 now matches our 20x40.  So the options are out there to do whatever your creative minds can think of with so much Green screen!

Month of May in Indy

Thursday, May 7, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Hey everyone!  I just wanted to write a quick post about the past 3 weeks here at Hammer Lighting & Grip!  Like my last post I wrote I said I loved May because we are always really busy with all the pre shoots with all the drivers.  We have had a great time working with some of the best people at ESPN.

We got to first work on what we all call the the "Indianapolis 500 Tease".  You ask "what's that mean"?  Well, turn to your TVs to WRTV 6 on Race day for Pre-Race between 7-8pm and then at 8:00pm right before the race actually starts you will see an introduction for the race.  Derek ended up working on that job and on the last day asked if I would want to be an extra.  Of course I said yes.  When do I ever get an opportunity to leave my normal job here and actually see what all my work goes too!  So my husband and I headed down to the Speedway to be extras on the 70's version of the commercial.  So look out Hollywood here we come!!

Welcome Indy 500 Fans!

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
As we all know the month of May is finally here.  In the Midwest this is a pretty big deal!  I have to say this one of my favorite times of the year.  There is just something about the Indianapolis 500, the people,  and the events around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway .
There are also many other events that go on in May's such as the Indy 500 festival which includes a Parade in downtown Indianapolis, the Mini Marathon and the opening of the summer concert series!

This is also one of the busiest months at Hammer Lighting and Grip.  We have plenty of gear around for any of your Lighting and Grip Equipment needs.  So come on over to our shop or give us a call we would be glad to help!

Independent Films in Indy

Thursday, April 9, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Recently at Hammer Lighting and Grip we have had a great opportunity to rent our Grip Trucks, Camera Dollies, Lights and our Generators to a few Independent Films.  Last year we got to work on the movie www.mynameisjerry.com .  It was all filmed in Muncie, In.

This year we are doing two, yes I said two Independent Films at once!!!  That means the month of April will be busy.  We have BOTH our 3 Ton Truck and our 4Ton Truck out for a full month. We're supplying them with camera dollies and generators too.  Now, this doesn't mean we are out of trucks, dollies, lights and generators.  We have plenty of options to get you the truck package you will need.  We don't want to you to forget about our 1 Ton and our 5 Ton Grip Trucks that are sitting waiting to be loaded up with lots of gear!!

Cage Match

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Alyssa Davis
Well, we have a cage but its not for fighting.  Its our return cage for late night shoots!  Think of it as a night drop box at your local video store, but bigger and a CAGE!

We all know that in the Film business shoots will always go past the time allowed to return gear.  We have this system that if you just give us a simple code we will make it easier for you to drop off or pick up your gear over night or in the wee morning hours.  So if you know you won't make it between our weekday hours 8:00 to 5:00 please let us know and we will be happy to set up a simple code for you.
